Strata underwriter hails ‘clear step forward’ on carbon footprint
CHU’s latest Sustainability Impact Report shows the company reduced its carbon footprint by one-fifth in the year to June as it switched to a hybrid vehicle fleet and cut business travel by 10%.
The strata insurance underwriting agency says its operational emissions fell to 466 tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent greenhouse gases, down from 584 a year earlier.
The most significant reductions came from cutting air travel and petrol vehicle use, while electricity consumption fell thanks to more efficient energy use in offices. Petrol emissions dropped 83% from a year earlier.
“The overall trend represents a clear step forward in reducing our environmental footprint,” CHU said.
A new Green Grant Program will award $50,000 to help body corporates and property owners implement sustainable initiatives and improve energy efficiency, and CEO Kimberley Jonsson says CHU has made progress addressing supply chain emissions, advancing reconciliation and expanding volunteering.
"Innovation, efficiency and sustainability aren’t add-ons – they’re fundamental to how we serve strata communities and how we shape the future of our sector,” she said.
CHU has planted almost 10,000 trees since 2019 through its partnership with the Forktree Project, and it raised $47,763 for charity in 2024-25.
It says 30% of its employees taking parental leave recently were male.
“This reflects a positive shift in supporting all team members to take an active role in family care, helping to reduce the impact of caring responsibilities on career progression ... creating conditions for equitable career development and leadership opportunities,” the agency said.
