Ram raid: police rustle up arrest warrant in ‘stolen sheep’ probe

A suspected insurance fraudster has been charged over allegedly fake claims for the theft of more than 650 sheep.

A police investigation in Devon, England, focused on three claims made within a year for thefts from fields rented by the accused.

The City of London Police Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department says documents submitted in support of the claims may have been fraudulent.

A total of £28,220 ($53,593) was paid out for two claims. A third claim for £64,800 ($123,064) was not accepted.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation and for making or supplying articles for use in fraud.

All sheep were found safe and well.

The case was referred to authorities by an insurer, and two homes, a garage and two vehicles were searched. Documents were seized and officers also recovered two shotguns that breached licensing conditions.

“Rural insurance fraud may be less common, but it can have a significant impact on insurers and genuine customers,” Detective Constable Carley Parodi from City of London Police said. “Fraudulent claims distort the true picture of risk and can contribute to higher premiums for honest policyholders.

“We will continue to investigate these offences and take action against those who seek to profit through fraud.”
