Code committee appoints new consumer rep

Consumer Action Law Centre managing lawyer Anna Meulman will join the Life Insurance Code Compliance Committee from Wednesday.

Ms Meulman will replace Financial Rights Legal Centre head of service delivery Alexandra Kelly as consumer member on the three-person committee.

“Alexandra has made a wonderful contribution to our work since the Life Insurance Code of Practice came into effect in 2017,” committee chair Jan McClelland said.

The committee says Ms Meulman has experience in consumer law, financial services, complaints handling and advocacy for vulnerable consumers.

“Anna brings a strong understanding of the issues affecting consumers, including vulnerable consumers, in the financial services sector,” Ms McClelland said.

Council of Australian Life Insurers CEO Christine Cupitt says Ms Meulman’s appointment comes at an important time, with the code undergoing an independent review.

“Ms Meulman’s experience at the Consumer Action Law Centre will bring an essential customer perspective to the committee at a time when the industry is actively working to ensure the … code remains strong, practical and aligned with community expectations,” she said.
