Compliance committee ‘carefully’ considering code proposals

The Life Code Compliance Committee is “carefully” examining proposed measures that will have a bearing on its oversight of the industry.

Final decision on the three proposals made by code reviewer Peter Kell lies with the independent committee but the Council of Australian Life Insurers has backed those suggestions.

The proposals call for the committee to review insurer experience and compliance with code requirements prior to the next code review; to publish data on how insurers are using “circumstances beyond our control” data; and to conduct an inquiry on how insurers approach decisions for customers who disclose HIV or other blood-borne viruses.

“CALI has supported [those] recommendations …  which are directed specifically to the committee,” the LCCC said.

“The committee is carefully considering those recommendations and its response.”

CALI last week released an action plan to address Mr Kell’s 85 proposals for the code of practice.

The LCCC says it welcomes the council’s response.

“Importantly, the action plan also includes proposed changes to strengthen independent oversight of the code,” the committee said.

“It looks forward to contributing to these areas and to the development of an updated code that sets clear expectations of insurers, provides clear and meaningful protections for customers and can be effectively monitored and enforced.”
