Bondi attack: insurers urged to notify terror pool of losses
The Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation has asked insurers to let it know about potential claims related to last night’s mass shooting at Bondi Beach.
Police today said 16 people died and 40 were injured after two men fired into crowds at 6.40pm while a Hanukkah event was taking place.
The ARPC has run a government-backed terrorism pool since 2003, which enables insurers to reinsure for eligible losses.
NSW Police commissioner Mal Lanyon last night described the incident as a terrorist attack, but the pool requires the relevant minister to make a declaration, which has not yet occurred.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at Bondi Beach,” the ARPC said. “Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, the survivors, and everyone affected by this event.
“The incident is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities. Please note that the provisions of the Terrorism and Cyclone Insurance Act 2003 relating to eligible terrorism losses do not take effect until the minister declares the incident as a terrorist incident under the TCI Act for the purposes of insurance.
“To assist ARPC in assessing potential losses, we ask our insurer clients to notify us of any potential claims and losses.”
Police say a “significant crime scene” has been established, closing Bondi Beach and surrounding roads.
Waverley Council says the beach and Bondi Pavilion are closed “until further notice”.
The NSW government has set up a special web page in relation to the attack, detailing mental health support and linking to an online condolence book.
