NSW dominates bushfire hotspot rankings

Eight of the 10 postcodes with the most homes at risk of bushfire are in NSW, data from GIO shows.

The south and central coasts are hotspots, the Suncorp brand says. Outside NSW, only Queensland’s Gympie and surrounds (postcode 4570) and Victoria’s Bendigo region (3551) made the top 10.

The top four are Batemans Bay (postcode 2536), Gosford (2250), Wyong (2259) and Shoalhaven (2540).

“There is the potential for a very hot summer ... Should rainfall deficiencies return to areas that have recently experienced wetter conditions, fuel drying could accelerate rapidly under hot conditions, substantially increasing the risk of bushfire,” GIO meteorologist Andrew Bufalino said.

Suncorp is reminding homeowners to clear gutters, trim nearby trees, mow lawns, store wood at least 10 metres from homes and prepare an easily accessed emergency kit.

Its GIO Haven platform gives homeowners a tailored resilience rating report.

“Ticking off those little chores around the house could make a world of difference this summer,” GIO head of home insurance Josh Kelland said. “Preventative measures ensure you’re prepped and ready, providing peace of mind ahead of an unpredictable El Nino cycle.”
