Perils lifts November storms loss tally

Storms that hit Queensland and NSW last November caused insured losses of $2.94 billion, Swiss data company Perils estimates.

The figure is up from the $2.66 billion estimated by Perils six weeks after the convective storms brought hail, damaging wind and heavy rain from November 21-27.

Perils’ analysis is based on loss data by postcode for property and motor hull lines of business.

Personal lines property losses represent 67% of the total, commercial lines property accounts for 21% and motor 12%.

About 91% of the total comes from Queensland, and NSW accounts for 8%.

Despite exceptionally large hailstones – up to 14cm in diameter in southeast Queensland – motor claims were lower than usual for such an event, Perils head of Asia-Pacific Darryl Pidcock says.
