Perils adjusts spring storms loss estimate to $1.5 billion

Insured losses from storms in Australia’s east in October will reach $1.5 billion, with Queensland making up 94% of the total, Swiss catastrophe data company Perils estimates.

Personal lines property represents 61% of the loss, commercial lines property one-quarter and motor 14%. NSW claims account for 5% of the total.

From October 26 to November 1, atmospheric instability caused repeated outbreaks of severe convective storms along Australia’s east coast, Perils says.

The  most devastating storms occurred on October 26, bringing large hailstones and damaging wind to Brisbane.

Impacts included hail-struck vehicles, smashed windows and solar panels, and roof damage.

“This is the first of two major severe convective storms that impacted this region within a month, generating over $4 billion in insured losses,” Perils head of Asia-Pacific Darryl Pidcock said.

The Insurance Council of Australia declared the storms a significant event and says there have been 41,200 claims.

The Perils estimate covers property and motor hull lines of business. An initial December estimate put the bill at $1.11 billion.

A further update will be made in November.
