Building Commission NSW has produced a guide to assessing, planning and delivering insurance repairs and reinstatement work on class 2 buildings.

Class 2 buildings – which include multistorey apartments, mixed-use properties and attached dwellings with shared basements and car parks – must comply with design and building practitioner legislative obligations.

The Repairs and Reinstatement Works Guide has been developed in consultation with the Association of Insurance Building & Engineering Consultants.

NSW assistant building commissioner Matt Press launched the guide at the AiBEC conference in Sydney last week, thanking the association’s working party headed by James McIntosh.

The guide features scenarios and flow charts to help stakeholders in the claims and repair process, including insurers, loss adjusters, builders, engineers, strata managers and design practitioners.

The conference also heard from University of Sydney School of Civil Engineering associate professor Yixiang Gan, who detailed a 12-month study in association with AiBEC on escape of liquids.

The study has been held in response to the government inquiry into the 2022 floods, which showed the need for a formalised framework for evaluating flood and escape of liquid claims.
