Governments boost Victorian fire recovery funding

The federal and Victorian governments have committed an additional $160 million to help communities recover from recent bushfires.

Up to $158 million comes through the joint Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, and the state is adding $2 million for schools to engage mental health services.

The total includes $112 million for a co-ordinated clean-up program, with Forge Solutions appointed as lead contractor.

Clean-up support is available for uninsured and underinsured homes and structures such as sheds or garages, and for businesses.

Community assets such as sporting facilities and community halls can access the assistance if their clean-up is not covered by other programs.

Victoria’s Emergency Recovery Support Program, which helps people navigate government services and can assist with insurance and legal questions, receives $20 million.

Funds will also go towards accommodation, public land and waterways, power outage payments, financial counselling, water supply, mental health and the Harcourt Co-operative Cool Stores rebuild.

The governments say the commitments build on more than $210 million already announced for relief and recovery.
