Regulator seeks feedback on RAC deal promises
The competition watchdog has called for feedback by Wednesday on IAG’s public benefit commitments supporting the planned acquisition of RAC Insurance.
IAG has proposed selling its NRMA Insurance home and motor portfolio renewal rights in WA and investing $20 million in resilience initiatives.
The company will make RAC home products available in the state’s north – including Karratha, Port Hedland and Broome, where insurance can be hard to access – and is proposing further commitments and accountabilities on product pricing and competitiveness.
IAG’s public benefits application also outlines gains from reinsurance arrangements and less concentrated risk exposure for WA-focused RAC Insurance.
A questionnaire on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission website seeks input as it weighs whether the public benefits outweigh the competition detriments that caused it to oppose the deal last month.
The public benefits assessment phase ends on December 22, subject to any extensions.
IAG and RAC have already indicated they will pursue an Australian Competition Tribunal review if the ACCC still opposes the transaction.
“RAC has chosen to partner with IAG to ensure its insurance offering to members is sustainable into the future, benefiting from our scale, technology and global reinsurance arrangements,” IAG CEO Nick Hawkns said last week.
“We are committed to creating this strategic alliance and are making substantial commitments to RAC, its members and all Western Australians.”
