WA builder collapse to trigger warranty claims

A WA regulator has told homeowners affected by the collapse of Tingey Development Group to contact builders’ warranty insurer QBE.

Tingey appointed liquidators last Wednesday, becoming the third WA-registered building contractor to enter insolvency this year.

Oversight department Building and Energy says it understands the company is yet to complete 15 projects.

“Contacting the insurance provider enables homeowners to begin the process of engaging another registered builder to complete the work or managing other remedies they may be entitled to,” Building and Energy executive director Daniel Kearney said.

Builders’ warranty insurance is mandatory cover taken out by construction companies that protects homeowners against financial loss for incomplete or defective workmanship if a builder dies, disappears or becomes insolvent.
