Marsh’s former head of corporate and commercial for the Pacific business Johannes D Veldsman has started in his new role with Gallagher Australia.

“We are happy to announce the commencement of JD Veldsman as chief commercial officer, managing Gallagher’s areas of specialisation,” the international brokerage announced on LinkedIn.

“Our team are looking forward to the insights, experience and leadership he will offer the business as well as the continued confidence our clients will experience as we enhance our specialist offerings to deliver tailored insurance solutions and effective risk management insight.”

As reported exclusively by insuranceNEWS.com.au last year, Mr Veldsman joins colleague Alex Lumby, who also left Marsh to become Gallagher’s local CEO.

A note sent by Mr Lumby to Gallagher staff, seen by insuranceNEWS.com.au, says the appointment is "very significant" to the business and is "key to bringing further collaborations... as well as driving growth".

"JD will be based in Sydney, and as part of his role will have national responsibility for the majority of our specialism teams," Mr Lumby writes.

"As you know, Paul Harvey has held the reign of Managing Director Corporate & Specialty for some time and Paul will continue to maintain some specialty areas as they align with our Corporate business and will work in partnership with JD to bring the best of Gallagher to our clients and prospects."

Mr Veldsman started his career in South Africa before moving to Australia with Aon in 2017. In 2018 he joined JLT, which was acquired by Marsh the following year.
