AEI Insurance Broking Group executive chairman Tim Wedlock has died after he and a number of pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in Nashville, Tennessee.

US news articles report that an 87-year-old driver ran a red light and hit four people at 12.30pm, August 1, Nashville time. Mr Wedlock died after being taken to hospital, and three others were injured.

AEI said today it is "deeply saddened" by Mr Wedlock's death.
 
"Tim spent 39 years with AEI, marking his anniversary with the business the week before his passing," the company said.

"Over that time he built AEI into one of Australia's most respected broking groups and established himself as one of the profession's most recognisable industry figures."
 
Mr Wedlock was a former president and fellow of the National Insurance Brokers Association, and spent more than 20 years on NIBA committees and the national board. He was also a long-standing supporter of the Careers in Insurance initiative.

"Advancing the professionalism and integrity of broking was a cause he returned to throughout his career, and he was unfailingly generous with his time and energy to those entering it."
 
He was named NSW Qualified Professional Insurance Broker of the Year in 2004 and again in 2009, and received the ANZIIF Insurance Leader of the Year award in 2018. In 2021 he was presented with the Lex McKeown Award for exceptional service to NIBA and the insurance profession.

The Australian Trucking Association honoured him with the Don Watson Memorial Award in 2014, and most recently he received the 2024 Austbrokers Frank Earl Award for excellence in insurance broking among Austbrokers Partners.
 
"Tim was the cornerstone of AEI and a legend of this industry," AEI MD and CEO Noel Kelly said.

"Thirty-nine years in, he still had more energy than anyone in the room. He gave his time freely, to our people, to NIBA, to anyone who asked. We have lost a leader and a mentor, but most of all we have lost a mate."
