Dispute body eyes rule changes to ‘keep pace’ with gene test ban
The industry ombudsman has proposed rule changes that will allow it to handle disputes related to the ban on the use of genetic test results in life underwriting.
Feedback on the Australian Financial Complaints Authority’s suggested amendments must be received by June 26.
EGM for jurisdiction and systemic issues Michelle Kumarich says the planned changes “will ensure we can consider complaints about the use of genetic testing in life insurance in line with the new protections for consumers.
“This will enable AFCA’s rules to keep pace with changes in the law.”
The ban is due to start on October 8, six months after federal parliament passed the legislation.
The authority’s consultation paper says that, subject to regulatory approval, its amendments would take effect from October 8.
