Marine veteran calls time on career

NTI’s national marine technical underwriter Michael Sullivan is to retire after more than five decades in the industry.

Mr Sullivan joined NTI as national manager for marine claims in 2017, when the agency’s marine operations launched.

“Mike ... has played an important role in helping develop both our marine portfolio and our people,” marine portfolio head Dan Morrison said.

“He is highly trusted in the way he operates and in the knowledge he brings, not only to NTI’s marine team but to the broader marine insurance industry. Internally, people rely on his advice and guidance, and externally there are brokers, industry participants and even legal professionals who seek his input because of his experience and judgment.”

Mr Sullivan began his career in underwriting in the early 1970s and has held marine insurance roles in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Before joining NTI, he worked at CGU from 2004, helping to head the company’s marine operations and later taking an expanded leadership role in claims.

He says his previous jobs were integral to his success at NTI, giving him “exposure to underwriting, claims and management roles, as well as working in several parts of the country”.

Mr Sullivan is now looking forward to spending more time pursuing personal interests.

“There are a few family milestones coming up and some travel planned over the next couple of years. I’m looking forward to having the time and space to focus on those things.”
